This week we have a wonderful MyLife Edinburgh employee testimonial from Gloria Thompson, 72 who is celebrating 20 years of working in home care, a career she has thrived in since day one.
Gloria, who continued her carer with MyLife, after spending many years with Carewatch Home Care Services, starts her day at 7.30am and involves a range of support tasks including showers, baths, washing, dressing, changing beds, personal care and shopping – the list goes on but the service is tailored to the needs of each client. What’s kept Gloria working in home care for so long, is the rewarding feeling that she’s helping people stay in their own home, and supporting them to stay as independent as possible.
Immense job satisfaction
When asked asked what she enjoys most about the job she says: “I enjoy having the ability to concentrate my time on one person, building relationships and trust. This is important, especially when supporting with things which may be out of clients’ comfort zone such as washing. Clients appreciate my help and it provides me with immense job satisfaction.”
“The MyLife and Carewatch teams have been very good to me. They’ve never let me down, they are conscientious about both my personal and career needs. They helped me complete my GNVQ in health and social care, even when I was going through a difficult time in my personal life. The training is great, I’ve actually got a refresher training course about medication tomorrow.”
Do everything you can to respect their dignity
Gloria discovered her true calling for care during a nursing career at Christchurch Hospital, she also worked as a nurse in Germany. Gloria advises anyone thinking about a career in care: “Take the opportunity. Do your training and get your NVQ, respect the people you look after then they will respect you – do everything you can to respect their dignity.”
Kerry Mason, Business Manager at MyLife Christchurch says; “Gloria is a much valued and respected member of the team. I congratulate her on 20 years of loyal service. MyLife Assistants like Gloria are the face of the business and without them, many people would not be able to live an independent life.”
To mark 20 years of dedication to the job, Gloria was presented with flowers by Care Manager Cherlene Breton and celebrated with the rest of the team on the date of her anniversary, Thursday 25 May.
